Firework Displays with Young Children

Before the Show

• Prepare your child by explaining what fireworks are (loud, bright, crowded).
• Bring noise-canceling headphones or earplugs for children sensitive to noise.
• Pack comfort items like a favorite toy or blanket.
• Arrive early to choose a safe viewing spot:
  • Far from launch areas.
  • Not too crowded.
  • Easy to exit if necessary.
• Dress appropriately:
  • Layers for evening weather.
  • Closed-toe shoes.
  • Bug spray and sunscreen if outdoors.

During the Show

• Keep children close — within arm’s reach.
• Consider ID bracelets or writing your phone number on your child’s arm.
• Watch for signs of discomfort or fear; be ready to move away from the crowd.
• Offer snacks, water, or distractions to help them stay calm and occupied.
• Protect their eyes with sunglasses if needed, and cover ears if the noise is too loud.

After the Show

• Wait a few minutes before leaving to avoid the rush and stay safe in the crowd.
• Do not allow children to pick up firework debris — it may still be hot or dangerous.
• Talk to your child afterward about the experience and reassure them.
