No Carving, Pumpkin Decorating Ideas for Kids

Fall is here, and that means it is officially pumpkin season! If you’re a parent with young children, you know that traditional pumpkin carving can be a bit tricky. Between sharp tools, messy guts, and short attention spans, it’s not always the most toddler-friendly activity. But don’t worry, there are tons of fun, creative, and completely safe ways to decorate pumpkins without ever picking up a knife. Here are our favorite no-carve pumpkin decorating ideas for kids of all ages!

1. Stickers

What You’ll Need:

  • Pumpkins

  • Assorted stickers (googly eyes, fall leaves, animals, letters, etc.)

Let your little one go wild covering their pumpkin with stickers. This is a great activity for toddlers and preschoolers to work on fine motor skills and there’s zero mess involved!

 Painted Pumpkins

What You’ll Need:

  • Washable paint or paint sticks

  • Paintbrushes or sponges

  • Smocks or old t-shirts

Painting pumpkins is an easy, colorful way for kids to express themselves. They can create patterns, faces, or abstract art. You can even add glitter or glow-in-the-dark paint for an extra pop!

 Masked Pumpkins

What You’ll Need:

  • Construction paper or foam sheets

  • Scissors and glue

  • Googly eyes, pipe cleaners, feathers, etc.

Turn your pumpkin into a silly monster, superhero, or animal by designing a face or mask. Kids can cut out (or help cut out) eyes, mouths, horns, and ears to glue onto their pumpkins.

 Pumpkin Dress-Up

What You’ll Need:

  • Baby clothes, doll hats, scarves, or old costume accessories

  • Stick-on mustaches, sunglasses, or mini hats

Have fun dressing up your pumpkin like a person or character! You can even give them names and voices, the sillier, the better.

 Nature-Decorated Pumpkins

What You’ll Need:

  • Leaves, acorns, sticks, pinecones

  • Glue or Mod Podge

  • Twine or raffia

Take your child on a little nature walk to collect materials, then use them to decorate a pumpkin. This is a calm, sensory-rich craft that brings the beauty of fall right to your doorstep.

 Googly Eye Pumpkins

Let your pumpkin become a silly monster by gluing googly eyes all over it! Add a smile or teeth with markers or stickers.

Materials:

  • Googly eyes (all sizes)

  • White glue or glue dots

  • Construction paper for mouths, teeth, and eyebrows

 Mummy Pumpkin

Wrap the pumpkin in toilet paper, gauze, or white crepe paper for a cute (and not-too-scary) mummy.

Add:

  • Googly eyes

  • Felt tongue or silly smile

Non-carving pumpkin decorating gives preschoolers a chance to explore textures, colors, and creativity all while celebrating the magic of fall. Happy Decorating!
